William Elvis Minshew, 98, of Waco, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 24 at 1:30 pm at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Dr. in Waco. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery.
Elvis was born September 9, 1916 in Cason, Texas to Dave and Altha Minshew. He attended school at the Texas State School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas where he played football and was in the ROTC. After attending the Texas State School for the Deaf, Elvis participated in boxing arenas in east Texas, where people would come just to see him box. He was very skilled and won several medals.
On December 6, 1942, Elvis married Velma Elizabeth Cates in Waco, Texas where he settled and where his only child Milly was born. He worked as a body and fender repair man in Waco for 44 years.
Elvis was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Velma Minshew; sisters, Fayrene Brader, Mary Lou Starr and Margaret Sue Watts; brothers, Ernest Minshew, J.D. Minshew, and James Minshew; Step-children, Wayne Wilson and Doris Wilson; Step-granddaughter, Joyce Stier; and Step great-great- granddaughter, Crystal Zoch.
He is survived by his daughter, Mildred “Milly” Minshew Herbert Atherton; granddaughter, Janice Stanley and her children, Landon, Jacquelyn and Sydney Stanley; Step-granddaughters, Chris Talasek, Flo Smith, Elizabeth Necessary, Becky Hardy and Kathy Stanfield; as well as his sister, Earline Owens. Elvis was also blessed with numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren.
