William "Bill" Mears, a proud Marine and devoted family man, passed away on October 6, 2024, in Waco, Texas, at the age of 70. Born on October 22, 1953, in Amarillo, Texas, Bill grew up with a strong sense of duty and commitment that shaped his life. He graduated from Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, California, in 1971 and, just two weeks after graduation, began his service to the country he loved.

Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June 1971, proudly serving until November 1975, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. His years of military service left a lasting impact on him, and he often spoke of the camaraderie, discipline, and deep pride he felt while serving his country. Bill’s time in the Marines was not just a chapter of his life—it was a defining experience that helped mold him into the man admired by his family and friends.

Bill married the love of his life, Pat, on November 13, 2004, at the age of 51, with a playful vow: “Can’t promise till death do us part, but I can promise we renegotiate in 40 years!” Bill came into Pat’s life when she needed someone the most, becoming her steadfast rock through life’s challenges. He was often her hero, doing the little things that made life easier—taking out the trash, catching geckos, offering a comforting hug when things felt overwhelming, and going out of his way to make sure Pat had chocolate milk every morning. Their love was a testament to devotion, humor, and unwavering support.

He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Lee Mears; his mother, Mary Ruth Anderson; his brother, Tom Mears; his sister-in-law, Harlene Mears; his sister, Karen Mears; and his beloved daughter, Penny Henderson.

Bill is survived by a large and loving family. He leaves behind his wife, Pat Mears; stepmother, Sheila Mears; his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Debbie Mears; his stepsister, Sheila Mears; and his four daughters and their spouses: Jennifer and Jesse Weaver, Charlotte and David Doran, Cheryl and Tom Crenshaw, and Jamie and Marc Montgomery. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Hayley Sylvester, Phillip Weaver, Dixie Weaver, Daisy Kaufman, Dallas Rive, Dakota Doran, Caden Crenshaw, Django Doran, Kesler Montgomery, and Landon Montgomery, as well as his great-grandchildren (4) and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bill was a man of quiet strength, whose love for his family was evident in everything he did. Whether he was sharing stories, offering advice, or simply spending time with his children and grandchildren, Bill always made sure his family felt loved and supported. He took pride in watching his family grow and excel, and his wisdom and guidance will be deeply missed.

He was deeply involved in First Methodist Waco, always offering a helping hand whenever someone was in need. His commitment to The Walk to Emmaus will be remembered by all who benefited from his contributions.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on his birthday at First Methodist Church of Waco on October 22nd at 10am. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and reflect on the lasting impact he made on their lives.

Semper Fi, Bill! You will forever be in our hearts.
