Wayne Rogers

November 20, 1926 — June 25, 2017

Wayne Ford Rogers, 90, a longtime resident of Waco, passed away on June 25, 2017 in Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Pecan Grove Funeral Home in Robinson, TX, officiated by grandson Aaron Scott. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.
Wayne was born outside of Bronte, TX to John Virgle & Iva Mae (Ford) Rogers on November 22, 1926. He married Charlynn Rogers on December 23, 1948 in Winters, Texas. He served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant. They lived in Bronte and then Winters before moving to Waco in 1953, where he worked as an Ironworker until his retirement in 1988. Most of his career in Waco was with Wales Industrial Service, where he worked with his brother, brother-in-law, and several nephews. He proudly told of many of his jobs and projects in the Waco area, including Rocketdyne, Owens-Illinois Glass Plant, General Tire, Alico Building changes, “The Bomb Plant” during the Vietnam era, launching of the Brazos Queen River Boat, and M&M/Mars. When Charlynn started and expanded her catering business, he supported those decisions and was always involved in helping to setup and deal with the extra labor needed to get all the details handled. He would tell friends “She does the cooking, I just wash the dishes!” Over the years, he and Charlynn were members of South Waco Church of Christ, Elm Mott Church of Christ and Lakeshore Drive Church of Christ in Waco and Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene. Wayne was a charter member of the Chalk Bluff Volunteer Fire Department, where he and Charlynn served together as firefighters and fundraisers. Wayne called Charlynn “his Sweetheart”, and said after losing her only two weeks before his own death “You know, she took care of me for 68 years!” It seems that he needed just that.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Charlynn; his parents; his brother, Leon; sister, Levada Simpson; and son-in-law Danny Duggan.
Wayne is survived by daughter Janiece Duggan Watts and husband Jim of Abilene; daughter Barbara Scott and husband Gerald of Weatherford; son Larry Rogers and wife Karen of Robinson; grandchildren Kaci Morrison and husband Tommy of Cherokee, Jerrod Duggan and wife Kim of Great Falls, MT, Ryan Duggan and wife Laci of Winters, Malcom Duggan & wife Eve of Snohomish, WA, Aaron Scott and wife Sarah of Levelland, Ashlee Bell and husband Ryan of Weatherford, Brandon Rogers of Burleson, Bradi Rogers and Bailey Rogers of College Station; great-grandchildren Talli, Tori and Xavier Morrison, Landon and Mason Duggan, Payton and Preslee Duggan, Faith and Jade Duggan, Hunter, Xander and Savannah Scott, and Addison Bell.
Pallbearers are Jerrod Duggan, Tommy Morrison, Ryan Duggan, Ryan Bell, Brandon Rogers, Jack Chaneyworth, and Dale Duggan.
Memorials may be given to Cherokee Home for Children, PO Box 295, Cherokee, TX, 76832. The family of Wayne wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Hillcrest Church of Christ, and University Place.
