Wayland Burke

August 14, 1942 — July 8, 2013

Wayland Gene Burke went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2013. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at Prairie Hill Baptist Church, in Prairie Hill with interment in the Prairie Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the funeral home.
Wayland was born August 14, 1942 in Mexia, Texas, to his parents, Frankie John Burke and Callie Elizabeth Sadler Burke. He was a business owner owning several types of businesses the last of which before he retired was Burke's Transmission in Waco. He raised cattle with his father and his best friend, George Matthews. He served in the Texas National Guard from 1964 to 1969 when he was honorably discharged. Wayland loved the country life of his childhood in Limestone County and especially his horses. He lived and worked most of his adult life in Waco. He loved to travel and especially loved traveling in Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico. The last three summers of his life he spent in Ruidoso, New Mexico where he daily attended the horse races, and made many new friends. He loved drag racing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frankie and Callie Burke; grandparents, Frank J. Burke and Laura Pittman Burke and Edell Sadler and Iva Shelton Sadler; uncles and aunts, Benton Sadler and Mary Sadler, Helen Burke, Jack Edell Sadler, Lois Burke Hansen, Dwayne Burke and wife, Ruby; first cousins, Willis Burke, Doris Burke Green, Margaret Burke, Mary Burke White, Wilmer Dell Sadler, Weaver Sadler; and his best friend and brother by choice, George Matthews.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Burke Diers and husband, Kenneth, and his niece, dog, Sadie Belle Diers; his aunt and uncle, Allie Lee Wheat and Aubrey Newton Wheat, and aunt, Margie Sadler; first cousins, Joyce Schulz, Phyllis Wheat Waller and husband, S.L., and Terry Wheat and wife, Pam; numerous of other cousins; his very special friend, Robert Black and wife, Joyce; and special neighbors and friends Jeanette Buckner, Clark Collins and wife, Bessie, and Janie Harper.
Pallbearer will be Kenneth Diers, Terry Wheat, Wesley Wheat, Robert Black, Kevin Black, Joe Pena and Ernest Wells. Honorary pallbearer George Matthews.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Uni Murphy's Healthy Living residential nursing facility at 2230 Lake Ridge Circle, Waco TX 76710, Providence Hospice, Prairie Hill Cemetery Association, Prairie Hill Baptist Church or .
