She met Jim Fowler and later married in 1954, having five children. Jim was in the Air Force and they extensively traveled which included a tour in Japan for two years. After 1965, Jim retired from the Air Force while stationed at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco. They were married for 20 years until his death in 1974.
While in Japan, Violet enrolled and received a Japanese floral design certification. Returning to the states, she attended Cliff Mann floral school in Denver, Colorado in 1975. She utilized these talents and opened her own business in floral design, specializing in weddings in 1976.
In 1976, she was introduced to Fred Echterling and they were married later that year and had one son together.
Additional educational accomplishments included receiving her G.E.D. then her Certified Nursing Assistant certification in her 50’s.
Violet’s interests included traveling to see family, cross-word puzzles, quilting and she especially enjoyed Wednesday quilt gatherings as well as weekly card games with close friends until her health declined.
As an avid Dolly Parton fan she delighted in telling all about her trip to Dollywood as well as her signed Dolly photo. She also credited Earl Campbell for teaching her the rules of football. In a local grocery store, an announcement was made that he was having a promotional booth for his food products as well as being available for autographs.
