Rosia Nell (Cureton) Hammond passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2024. She was born May 2nd, 1936, to Sarah and Alec Cureton. She was also welcomed into this world by her big brother, Elvis.
Nell grew up on her grandfather's farm outside of Jewett. They had a shotgun house with no running water or electricity. She had very fond memories of her life on the farm and would often talk about climbing trees and swimming in Mills creek with her cousin Charlie.
She moved to Fort Worth, married and had five girls. Janis, Patricia, Phyllis, Pamela and Lynda. She kept herself busy managing a variety of jobs from commercial fishing, production, landlord and a business owner.
Nell loved to travel. She looked forward to vacation every year. She constantly kept her bags packed, just in case. She and her late husband spent six months exploring Alaska and visited as many states as they could. She would talk for hours about her Alaskan excursions and always wanted to go back. In her later years she helped plan trips with her grandson Daniel. They wanted educational trips. Some of their trips included The Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Niagara Falls, Plymouth Rock and White Sands New Mexico.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Ringo, Phyllis Smith and Lynda Chapple; grandchildren, Brett Cravy, Brian Cravy, Joshua Cravy, Kelly Adams, Michael Smith and Daniel Chapple; sister-in-law, Barbara Cureton; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; along with her childhood best friend, Nell Cox Linton.
Nell is preceded in death by her parents, Alec and Sarah Cureton; brother, Elvis Cureton; daughter, Janis Cravy; daughter, Pamela Darling; grandson, Stephen Cravy; and husband, Hershel Hammond.
