Roman Gonzales

February 28, 1923 — August 23, 2014

Roman Gonzales passed away August 23, 2014 in Waco, Texas. Private family graveside services will be held. A celebration of his life will be held at 302 N. Old Robinson Rd. on Tuesday, August 26 from 6pm – 8pm.
Roman Gonzales was born on February 28, 1923 in Calvert, Texas to Mexican immigrants Felipe Gonzales and Enedina Villanueva. He married Clementina Garibay and they had two children. They were married 74 years.
Roman was a born farmer and a true steward of God’s land. He and his wife started out their married life as hourly wage workers in the Brazos Bottom at Calvert. They migrated to the Lubbock area for seasonal work one year, and saw opportunity for them there; then came back to the Brazos Bottom and stayed until the next year. They sold their mules and plows and loaded their children to move to the Lubbock area. This was the beginning of their 24 year journey together in the west Texas area.
Being good farmers, they were dedicated to hard work and were good managers. There the two of them, with his brother Jack and his family, began buying land in the Plainview area.
They sold their land in the west Texas area after 24 years and came back to the Brazos Bottom in Waco to farm leased land, and in a year they started buying land in the Marlin area.
He attended school only six months, but had dyslexia and could not learn to read. Because of his inability to read, he knew he needed to work harder physically and mentally and did just that. His wife and other family members were always by his side to help.
Roman was predeceased by his parents Enedina and Felipe Gonzales, his brother Jack Gonzales, sister Hortencia Torrez, and son Reynaldo Gonzales. He is survived by his wife Clementina Gonzales, daughter Esmeralda Baker, and her husband Doye Baker, grandson Mike Gerhardt, granddaughter Beverly Johnston and her husband Duke Johnston, five great-grandchildren, sister Elvira Leal and husband Lupe Leal and sister-in-law Elida Gonzales.
The family would like to give thanks to Arnulfo Perez who was his working companion on the farm for many years and became his caregiver when Roman became disabled. They fought the battle with Alzheimer’s together. The nursing staff at Wesley Woods and Providence Hospice were incredible.
Memorials may be made to Mission Waco World.
