Robert Louis “Bob” McCarty, 74, died February 1, 2016, from complications caused by lung cancer. A memorial service will be held at Lake Shore Church of Christ at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13.
Bob was born August 12, 1941, in Ft. Worth, Texas, a few minutes after the birth of his twin sister Rita. He was the only son of his parents, George and Florence McCarty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Patricia Patterson McCarty, and infant son Jonathan.
Bob is survived by his wife Katie; sons Patrick of Ft. Worth, Michael and wife Amanda, grandchildren Linzy and Tanner all of Red Oak; sisters Martha Abernathy, Mary Martin, Pat and husband Jimmy Mitchell, and Rita Wood; best friend Roger Frith, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating high school, Bob attended college at North Texas State University for a year, then enlisted in the Marines in 1960. After boot camp, he wanted to work on an aircraft, and in order to do that, he enlisted in the Air Force, and went through their boot camp as well. He served from ’60 –’64, being stationed as far away as Japan.
Once home, Bob went back to North Texas, graduating in 1967 and staying for a one year fellowship at the university. While at school, he met his future wife, Patricia, in 1966. Bob began his teaching career in 1968 at Agnew Middle School as a history teacher. It was here where he met his lifelong friend, Roger. Unbeknownst to him, he was soon made an English teacher as well. In 1972, he took a sabbatical to work on his PH.D. Once his first son was on the way, he returned to teaching at North Mesquite High School. He mainly taught advanced placement classes and always enjoyed teaching. He was able to work here alongside Roger as well. Bob retired from teaching in 1995.
Outside his teaching career, Bob was always working on a project. Remodeling the house for Katie, restoring Studebakers with Michael, and eventually building a house from the ground up, a lifelong desire of his. He really enjoyed woodworking and building furniture.
Bob loved to travel and was known for taking three week long road trips. Colorado was his favorite destination and he had hoped to drive Trail Ridge Road to Estes Park one more time. During their almost 27 years together, he and Katie visited most of the western and southern states. His favorite trip was to England, Wales, and Scotland in 2005.
A special thanks goes out to all of the wonderful hospice nurses that tended to Bob both at home and at the hospice center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either Providence Hospice Place, 300 Hwy. 6, Waco, 76712, or Lake Shore Church of Christ, 2800 Lake Shore Drive, Waco, 76708.
