Richard Briggs

Richard (Dick) Briggs, 87, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, Dec. 4, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 2 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3, at the funeral home.
Richard (Dick) Briggs born August 9, 1930 in Town-of-Henderson, Jefferson County, New York to Florence Mildred (Huggins) and Clayton J. Briggs. He attended school at Whitney Point Central. He finished 7th grade when his dad took him out of school to attend to raising 8,000 chickens and to do farm chores.
He entered the United States Army when he turned 18 years old in 1948 -1959. After serving in the military, he worked as a painter and a truck driver. He moved to Waco, Texas in 1978, married Charon Morell on January 12, 1984. He loved to visit family in New York and fish whenever he could. He served as a volunteer chaplain from 1987 – 2011 in various prisons throughout Texas. This was the light of his life to visit those behind bars and let them know that God loves them and to share the gospel with them. One of his favorite sayings for saying goodbye was “Stay out of jail.”
Survivors include wife, Charon Briggs; two sisters, Alta Birtch of Binghamton, New York, Dawn Luecke of Waco, Texas; one brother, Daniel Briggs of New Brunswick, Maine; two sister-in-law’s, Marge Briggs of Binghamton, New York and Madeline Briggs of Windsor, New York; one daughter, Peggy Igo (Michael) of Binghamton, New York; three step-daughters, Barbie Kopczyk (Frank), Peggy Ferguson (Steve), and Audie Good, all of Waco, Texas; two granddaughters; four grandsons; five great-granddaughters; many nieces and nephews and one special friend, Charlie Pate, who thought of him as “Pop” and he thought of Charlie as “Son”.
Preceding in death were his parents; two brothers, Tracy Bengamin Briggs and Clayton J Briggs, Jr.; and two sisters, June Starr Mezick and Vera Wayent.
The family would like to thank the Westview Manor Nursing Home Staff for the wonderful care they have shown to him over the last two years.
Pall Bearers will be Kyle Good, King Regian, John Regian, Michael Martin, Charlie Pate, and Jerry Goode.
