Mitchel Jager, DVM, “Doc” passed away at his home in Gholson, Texas on January 11, 2023 at the age of 80. Mitchel was born to Herman and Emilie Jager in Bay City, Texas on September 17, 1942. He was one of six boys. He graduated from Tide Haven High School in Blessing, Texas, then worked his way through college and veterinary school at Texas A&M where he was also a member of the Corp of Cadets. Mitchel graduated with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine with the Class of 1967. In August of that same year, he married Anita Martine. Together they had three children, Karen Marie, Kimberly Rena, and Kyle Mitchel. Mitchel and Anita were married for 46 years and made their home in Robinson, Texas.
Doc’s first veterinary job was in Sulphur Springs, Texas. They moved to Waco after a few years there and he opened his first practice on Franklin Avenue. He then bought a practice on Circle Rd, where he was for the majority of his career. In the last few years, Doc primarily worked on small animals in a small clinic in Robinson. Mitchel was a volunteer veterinarian with the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo and McLennan County Livestock Show for many years. He has worked on thousands of local kids’ livestock projects, as well as farmers’ and ranchers’ livestock, clients’ pets, and even an occasional bird or squirrel.
His work was his life and he loved it, which was proven by him retiring just a few years ago. Mitchel was a strong believer in our Lord and Savior and was baptized as a child. He definitely had a servant’s heart as he was known to give clients the “Blue Plate Special”, “Kim, Karen or Kyle’s Friend Deal”, or trade services such as farm work or carpentry for care of their animals. He was also known to occasionally take people in need to breakfast early in the morning before heading into work at his clinic. Mitchel loved to barbeque, even though it was usually burned because he would get to messing with something else and forget about it. He enjoyed going to the rodeo, watching football, and having a huge garden, of which he'd give most of it away. He even had a small garden planted behind his clinic most years.
Mitchel is survived by the mother of his three children, Anita Jager of Robinson, daughters, Karen Michael and Terry of Gholson, and Kim Wollard of Robinson; son, Kyle Jager and Leah of Downsville; grandchildren, Ryan, Destiny, Lydia, Wyatt, and Wylie; brothers, Raymond of Alvin, and Carl and Bertie of Blessing; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emilie; brothers, Leroy, Paul, and Tom, all of Blessing.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Pecan Grove Funeral Home. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday January 16 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to McLennan County Livestock Show or Meals on Wheels in his honor.
The family would like to thank all our family and friends for the support and love shown to us during this time. Doc was one of a kind and is having one heck of a party up in heaven right now. The past few years he was not the same man due to dementia, but we are at peace knowing he is no longer suffering mentally or physically.
