Michael Joseph Witherwax, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed peacefully surrounded by family on October 19th, 2024, at 77. Born on January 22, 1947, in Denver, Colorado, Michael lived a life of faith, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held Monday, October 28, 2024, at New Road Church of Christ at 11:00 am, followed by burial at Waco Memorial. Visitation will be Sunday, October 27th at Pecan Grove Funeral Home in Waco from 2:00-4:00 P.M.
A proud Christian, and former elder of the church, Michael served his country honorably in the Army serving two tours in the Vietnam War, and spending time in Germany where he forged lasting friendships and learned the values of duty and camaraderie. His commitment to service continued beyond his military years, as he spent over 25 years with Little League Baseball Incorporated, overseeing Little League programs across seven states. His passion for fostering teamwork and sportsmanship extended to his role as a devoted referee and umpire throughout Texas, where he left a lasting impact on young athletes.
Michael's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He cherished his role as a husband to Judy, the love of his life, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love for almost 53 years. As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he took immense pride in supporting his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors, attending every game, recital, and milestone with enthusiasm and joy.
After bravely battling pancreatic cancer, Michael embraced retirement with grace, dedicating his time to nurturing the passions and dreams of his family. He was a constant source of encouragement, always ready with a smile, a word of wisdom, or a helping hand. He is leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness that will continue to inspire all who have known him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Evelyn Witherwax; sisters JoAnn, Cheryl, and Donna; brother Jim, nephew Jeremiah and great-nephews Derek and Josh.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his children, Michele Dvorak and husband Joey, Sean Witherwax and his wife Holly; his grandchildren, Madison Freas and husband Carter, Haydn Witherwax, Croix Dvorak, Lucas Dvorak, Mia Witherwax, and Mayzi Witherwax; his great-grandchild, Parker Freas; and his brother, Greg Witherwax and wife Teresa; along with many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Haydn Witherwax, Croix Dvorak, Lucas Dvorak, Carter Freas, James Fisher, Brad Stevens, and Zachary Witherwax. Honorary pallbearers are Jeremiah Witherwax, Chad Kuehl, Matthew, Zachary, and Dayne Fischer, and Scott, Tim, and Vaughn Wilson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Road Church of Christ Missions and World Bible School, reflecting Michael's commitment to community and service.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those he touched.
A special thank you to all who loved and supported Michael during his sickness, including thoughts and prayers from family, friends, and the caring staff at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center- Hillcrest.
