Melba Ruth Atkinson Vetter, 87, went to be with the Lord August 19, 2917. She was at home in her Waco retirement center, where she had lived in her apartment, by herself, for the past two years. The previous thirty-three years her and her husband lived in Ingram, Texas.
Ruth, was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, David L. Vetter, her parents, Smith and Nellie Atkinson, and sisters, Donna Lee, Beverly, and brother, Gene.
Left to continue her legacy, are her children and their families: Donna and Bill Spann, Mike Vetter, Bob and Leann Vetter, and Patti Goforth. Also surviving are numerous grand-children, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was a lifelong Christ Follower and an active member of the Methodist Church; first in Houston at Park Place, then in Hunt. She was very involved in community activities: Friends/Faculty of Ingram ISD, West Kerr-Chamber of Commerce, Republican Women, Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting, Girl Scouts, and Band Boosters. She both enjoyed listening and preforming music. She played piano, cello, guitar, and hand bells. She sang with her friends, in the church choir, and the Community Chorus. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in the 90’s.
If you wanted to talk about religion, politics, or sports, she was always ready! She loved watching her favorite team, the San Antonio Spurs. She also enjoyed attending marching band and concert band contests. She had a knack for picking the winners and usually was very close to the judges’ decisions. (Ruth always wished all the bands could get a “One!” She knew and appreciated how hard the kids worked.)
Services will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, 1207 Old Robinson Drive, Waco.
In lieu of flowers, gifts or memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
