Leroy Phillips, 83, of Robinson, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco, with Pastor Cary Killough officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors 5 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 6, at the funeral home.
Leroy was born March 4, 1931, in Robertsdale, Alabama, to James and Hettie Phillips. He served in the United States Air Force for 10 years and the Air Force Reserves for four years. While stationed at James Connally Air Force Base, he met the love of his life, Barbara Dickerson. They married November 9, 1957. Leroy worked at the VA Hospital. After retiring, he enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He traveled to Colorado for nine straight years to deer hunt. He fished with many friends, including church groups and was known for his famous potato salad on his fishing trips. He also loved to garden and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with friends and family. Leroy also raised pheasant and quail. He was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church and he loved his church family. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Leroy Phillips; and two brothers, Oliver Phillips and Harry Phillips.
Leroy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Phillips; brothers Billy Phillips and wife Truc, and Gordon Phillips and wife Drema; sisters, Lillian McKissack and husband Bill, and Jean McVay and husband Kenny; his granddaughter Courtney Phillips Sanders and Gary Sanders; his great-grandchildren, Skyelar and Gage Sanders, and daughter-in-law, Francene Dorton and her children Caleb and Jacob Dorton.
