LaVerne was born in Dot, Texas, September 25, 1927, to Ova Leonard and Jewell B. Maricle. In her youth LaVerne learned the value of hard work and the importance of family while attending school in Cego and Chilton. She was proud to have attended 4-C Business College in Waco as a young adult.
Having moved to Temple after their marriage, Billy and LaVerne quickly decided to return to their hometown to raise their two young sons, Frank and Harvey. They moved back to the community that had shaped them, trusting it would teach the same values to their children. They have been active members of the Mooreville community for over 50 years.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arthur, and a sister, Joyce.
Survivors include her husband, Billy; sister, Ruth Moore and husband, Gary D; brother, Lawrence Maricle and wife, Clarette; son, Frank Johnson and wife, Faye; son, Harvey Johnson and wife, Barbara; grandchildren: Jodi Goff and husband, John; Brandy Romer and husband, Paul; Jamie Johnson and wife, Michele; Tonya Kuykendall and husband, Jason; Jacki Haroldsen and husband, Byron; Jeremy Johnson and wife, Jaclyn; and 12 great-grandchildren.
LaVerne loved to dance and cook meals for her family. For the last 39 years she treasured being called Nana and made sure she shared homespun wisdom with her posterity, often around the dinner table. She loved to tell stories, and was a fearless advocate for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandsons.
The family would like to thank the staff of Providence Hospice, especially Cathy Neumann and Benny Urban, RN, for the thoughtful, professional and exceptional care they provided during the past few weeks.
