Johnny Jay Van Matre passed away peacefully on March 20, 2021 in Waco, Texas after a short illness. He was 78 years old.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Catherine of Robinson; children, Mike and wife Dorreen of Jefferson; Robin and husband Jim Newman of Longview along with their mother Bonnie Lange; sisters, Dora Harper and Margie Strader and husband Ashley; brother Joe and wife Jennifer; grandson Matthew Newman; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ralph, Harvey, Melvin, Clovis and Bill along with sisters, Alice, Clara and Lois.
Johnny was born on October 25, 1942 in Edinburg, TX to Mamie “Bunch” and Clovis Van Matre. He was the ninth of twelve children. Johnny graduated from San Perlita High School and shortly after started ranching and farming That became his lifelong love. He became an electrician and HVAC certified technician going on to work for Star Electric Company in Waco for many years. He owned his own company, Robinson Electric. On May 23, 1981, Johnny married Catherine Jewell Saddler. Soon after, Johnny and Cathy moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where he began working for his brother, Joe, at Specialty Rental Tools as an oil field salesman. He thrived and found his niche. Years later, he went on to work for Eagle Oilfield Inspection Services until his retirement. Johnny spent many years raising cattle and managing properties alongside his mother-in-law, Mayella Saddler, at their beloved farm, Moonlight Acres in Robinson, TX until her passing. He and Cathy continued to call the farm home until his death.
In his spare time, Johnny had two loves. He was a proud member of the Tejas Vaqueros since 2008. His time in the canyon was very special to him, and the time with his Vaquero brothers was something he cherished. Johnny was also a life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was a member of the Horspitality Committee and served on it for 17 years. He loved his time working in the arena with the Horse Show alongside his many friends.
Johnny was also a Master Mason of the 32nd degree and member of Waco Lodge no. 92.
Johnny lived a colorful life. He worked hard and played harder, always making sure everyone had a good time. He loved his family and friends dearly and will be remembered for his pranks, his hard work and ability to do almost anything. He was quite a character.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 23rd from 5:00-7:00 PM at Pecan Grove Funeral Home in Robinson, Texas. Services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum in Waco. Due to Covid concerns, there will be no gathering following services. Masks are required.
