JD was born September 7, 1925 in Rock Creek, to Eugene Albert Brownlow and Rosilla Rogers Brownlow. He was raised in China Spring where his parents were share croppers and he helped work on the farm from a very early age. His mom passed away and his dad had to go to a hospital for TB. JD quit school in the 8th grade to run the farm gathering in the crop and planting and gathering two more crops after that. He decided farming was not his calling and went into the Navy when he was 17 years old. He served in WW II in CASU44(F) on Tinian in the Mariana Islands.
After the Navy, JD married Louise Mirick whom he had known since they were 13 years old. They married in Salome, Arizona on October 16, 1946. The next year they returned to Texas and JD worked at General Tire for a short time. In November of 1947, he started to work at the VA Hospital in the kitchen. Later, he transferred into the Paint Shop where he worked his way up to Paint Shop Foreman. He retired from the VA at 55 years old. He also painted on his off time for many VA doctors, nurses and friends and family in the Waco and surrounding areas. He was in great demand because of his awesome talent.
He and Louise shared a wonderful 65 years traveling, bowling and many trips to Las Vegas and Shreveport. Louise was diagnosed in the mid 1990’s with Alzheimer’s. JD was her very dedicated caregiver until she passed in 2010.
