James Ray Nunn, Jr., 64, longtime resident of Waco, passed away May 24, 2015 at Providence Hospital. Born May 12, 1951 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to James Ray Nunn, Sr. & Marilyn Miller Nunn, he was the first born of 4 children.
A former US Army Vietnam Veteran, Mr. Nunn was a Master Gardener and Tree Surgeon. He loved animals, nature and the great out doors, never without a pet or aquarium of tropical fish. After leaving the service he gained employment at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he worked with the Prime Apes and in the zoo nursery. He moved to Texas where he acquired his degree as a Master Gardener and Tree Surgeon. This allowed him to pursue his interest in horticulture while working for different estates and nurseries in the Ft. Worth and Waco areas. At the time of his death he was employed as the Master Gardener for Rountree Gardens in Waco. Kind hearted and compassionate he preferred a one to one approach for helping his friends and neighbors instead of joining groups and organizations. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and making people laugh. He would invite you in to eat the mornings "catch of the day" with fresh picked garden vegetables, while making your sides ache with laughter about the one that got away.
Genesis 1:21
"So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good."
His kinship with God's creatures was as strong as his love for nature and fishing. He never turned away a animal in need and his home was often a rescue shelter for many, including his beloved dog Mr. Socks who sometimes went to work with him. Cats, dogs, birds, fish all "God's creatures great and small" could be found in his care.
He is preceded in death by his father James Ray Nunn Sr. Ft. Worth TX and a younger brother David Scott Nunn, Colorado Springs, CO.
James is survived by his wife Deanna and son David Nunn of Waco, daughters Jean Feenstra & Jacqueline Reel both of Colorado Springs, CO. Four grand children David and Isabella Feenstra, Autumn & Ashlynn Reel. His mother Frances Miller of Grand Junction, CO and sisters Dawneale Galyon of Waco and Jean Herod of Burdick, KS.
