Howard Allen

Howard "Jaybird" Allen, DVM, 78, of Rosenthal, left this life for the promised Eternal Life Friday, March 26, 2010. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, with the Rev. Richard Rusk officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Howard was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Waco, Texas, to Howard J. Allen, Sr. and Elizabeth (Hackney) Allen. He attended Waco High School, graduating in 1949. He married the love of his life, Harriet Holton, in Kerrville July 3, 1958. Dr. Allen graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry in 1953. He spent the next two years at Kerrville Entomology Station under Dr. Ruddy Radcliff. He then returned to Texas A&M as a Distinguished Student. Allen entered the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1958, and graduated in 1960 with a BS degree in Animal Science. He earned his D.V.M. degree in 1963. He held an active license for the State of Oklahoma and Texas. He spent one year with U.S.D.A. Animal Plant Health Inspection Services, in Lorado, before entering into large animal practice in 1963. He spent ten years raising and researching registered Brahmans.
In past years, Dr. Allen had been a member of numerous organizations including, AVMA, and TVMA, National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, American Brahman Breeders Association, Texas Brahman Association and HOT Brahman Association. He was on the Board of Directors of HOT Brahman Association, as well as the McLennan County Jr. Livestock Show. He served as official Veterinarian for the HOT Fair and Rodeo and was superintendent. of the donkey and mule show. His most prestigious position was the Official Ass Inspector of American Donkey and Mule Association and Registry. He built his Veterinary Clinic in 1970, where he and Harriet worked together for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved wife, Harriet Allen.
He is survived by his two daughters, Salli Allen of Rosenthal, and Terri Craft and husband, Carl, of Golinda; and three grandchildren, Terin Craft of College Station, Casey and Cristin Craft of Golinda.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Junior Easterling, Dr. Charlie Gram, Jody Youngblood, Keith Hanson, Scott Felton, and Richard Shelton.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jim Gibbs, Bernd Hirsch, Jimmy Ramerez, and all Pigion Flyers.
We will truly miss our daddy, paps and best friend. He was always there for our need, advice and love.
