To put his longevity into perspective, William Howard Taft was president of the US when he was born. Mr. Neumann did much in his life. He was born in Elm Mott, Texas, where his family farmed. He sometimes related adventures of hauling bales of cotton and other farm products down Elm Street and over the suspension bridge by horse and wagon.
Mr. Neumann attended Robinson Academy run by the legendary John Strauss. He met the love of his life, Gertrude Elizabeth (Trudy) Wollitz while in Robinson. They were married for 80 years at his death. Herbert and Trudy farmed the acreage where the Mars Candy Company is now located. Herbert served on the Midway School Board for several years, where his children attended school.
During the 1950's, Herbert bought land along Country Springs Road in Lorena and continued to farm and raise cattle. He built a house in Robinson at the site previously owned by Trudy's parents and commuted to the farm in Lorena. They lived near St. Johns United Church of Christ where he and Trudy were life-long members. They both loved Jesus Christ and they lived their lives as a testimony of this love.
Herbert loved to fish. He was good at catching catfish using a rod and reel. He loved to go the coast for saltwater fishing whenever he could. In later years he became a golfer, he often bragged that he could shoot his age, which very few people can accomplish. He was known as a tough competitor in a domino game.
Mr. Neumann was preceded in death by his parents John and Amelia Neumann, four brothers, Johnny, Paul, Warner, and Buster, four sisters, Amanda Frosch, Wanda Riverie, Hilda Neyhard, and Ella Joines. Mr. Neumann is survived by his wife Trudy, who shared a room with him at Royal Manor, his children, Shirley Jankowiak and husband Len, Dorothy Peevey and husband Robert, Ted Neumann and wife Doris. Herbert had 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He had many friends who loved him and will miss him.
