The Heavens rejoiced as Harry K. Thompson was welcomed into eternal peace and joy on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the age of 89. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, July 6, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco, with Rev. Buddy Sipe and Rev. Jim Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Robinson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 4 – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 5, at the funeral home.
Harry was born November 13, 1925 in Athens, Texas, to Glen and Octavia Wilson Thompson. He was a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII, having served under General George Patton. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. During his military service, Harry received: two Purple Hearts, one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, WWII Victory EAME Campaign, and Sharp Shooter medal.
He married Dorothy Lorrain Overby. Harry worked at General Tire for 31 years and shod horses in and around McLennan County for over 35 years. He was the manager at Midway Texaco and H & L Texaco of Robinson. He managed Pinnacle Tire Co. until it closed, and he worked at Pecan Grove Funeral Home for fifteen years. Harry was a Master Mason for 61 years. He was a member and Deacon at Cottonwood Baptist Church, where he was in the Wise Men’s Sunday school class. Harry was a former mayor of Robinson and was past president of the Robinson ISD school board, Robinson Lions Club, the Saddle Club, where he also served on the board of directors, and the Robinson Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed horses, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harry had a great love of people and helping others.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and five brothers.
Harry is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy; daughter, Kathy Moss and husband Larry; son, Steve; brother, Bruce Thompson; grandchildren, Rebecca Woods and husband Charles, David, Darrell, and Alissa; and great-grandchildren, Zach, Madison, Taylor, and Ava.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Thompson, David Moss, Larry Moss, Zach Thompson, Charles Woods, and Eddie Smith.
