The family of Gloria Arechiga Vasquez mourns the loss of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as we celebrate her life and the role she played in our guidance. She did so with the help of our father, Gus. They married in August of 1949. Carol and Rosemary were born a few years later and, eventually, Richard rounded out the family. Funeral services will be 9:00 a.m., Thursday, September 8, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco, with Deacon Tony Arocha officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. A visitation will be from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, at the funeral home, with a rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Our mother enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending quiet time with her fur babies. But she refused to let time march on without her. Mom went so far as to buy herself a laptop and take a computer class to learn how to use it, and she maintained her driver’s license and was still behind the wheel at 90. The younger mother we remember could be tough. She kept us in line but had an easy laugh and was great about making anyone around her feel comfortable. Mom and Dad were long time members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and they were always ready to help with upkeep and fundraising efforts for the church. They built a good life together. Our mother worked outside the home. Among the places where she turned co-workers into lifelong friends are Jeffrey Place Health Care, Central Presbyterian Church and HEB, where she was not only a dedicated employee but also a die-hard customer. Mom had a “go, see and do” spirit. She loved to travel. Probably her favorite trip was to the Holy Land in Israel. That touched her spirit. But she loved, almost as much, trips to Washington DC, New York City, and a few places in between. Back home, Mom enjoyed so much of what her hometown had to offer; fun shopping and a good meal; and the Baylor Lady Bears basketball games. She had so many friends to do these things with and, of course, always her family.
We thank each of you who helped care for our mother in her final months. Thank you for visiting Gloria, calling to check on her, sending cards and offering prayers. Thank you for all the flowers; they were very much appreciated.
Gloria was born to Janie and Dan Arechiga on February 18, 1932. She passed away on August 29, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Vasquez and grandson, Thomas Warlick. She lives on in the memories of her daughter, Carol Holbrook and husband David, as well as their children Seth and Micha; daughter, Rosemary Warlick and husband Randall and their son Troy; son, Richard Vasquez and his son Pete; two great-granddaughters and cousin Luann Aguilar. Gloria’s many friends will remember her for a long time, and we know her fur babies Misha and Simon are missing her as well.
In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial in Gloria’s name to Meals on Wheels Waco, 501 W. Waco Drive, Waco, TX, 76707. They were incredibly helpful in caring for our mother.
