Gladys was born on February 14, 1944, to Walter and Minnie Winkler in The Grove, Texas. She married the love of her life, James Rayford Dutschmann on June 22, 1963. They were blessed to celebrate 57 years of marriage together. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Weldon and Oliver Winkler.
She is survived by her beloved husband Rayford; three daughters, Judith Schermerhorn and her husband Robert of Glen Rose, Janet Hewitt and her husband Wade of Robinson, and Jennifer Brown and her husband Brent of Eddy; one son, James Dutschmann of Eddy; four grandchildren, Alicia DeMoulin and her husband Lucas of Sobieski, WI, Robert Schermerhorn, Jr. of Frisco, Jonna Hewitt of Lubbock and Tristan Hewitt of San Diego, CA; two great-grandchildren, Alivia and Carson DeMoulin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Gladys was a life-long member of the Lutheran faith and dedicated mother, first and foremost. She treasured her children and cherished every moment with them. She especially loved her roles as Grandma and Great-Grandma, often traveling many miles to attend games, play-offs, recitals, dance competitions and concerts. Gladys graduated from Belton High School and attended Temple Junior College. She was known for her compassionate spirit, and she made many friends over the years through her employment at T-Shirts Plus, Baylor Ferrell Center, Dolly Madison, Olan Mills and Robinson I.S.D., where she was affectionately called “Mrs. D.” by students. She also gave numerous volunteer hours as a librarian and Vacation Bible School teacher at St. Mark Lutheran School in Waco. Gladys loved to cook and bake and make sure everyone had plenty to eat. She also had a passion for gardening and tending to her flowers. She looked forward to yearly trips to Port Aransas, where she loved to watch the seagulls and ships come in. She was a talented seamstress, sewing many amazing ensembles for the Baylor Homecoming Parade.
