George Ray

July 2, 1937 — January 12, 2018

George Gilbert Ray, Jr., (Gee), 80, of Waco, Texas, passed away on Friday evening, January 12, 2018, at Providence Medical Center in Waco, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30am Saturday Jan. 27, 2018 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, 1207 N Old Robinson Rd, Waco, TX 76706, with Dr Cary Killough officiating.

Gee was born in Detroit, Michigan to George Ray, Sr. and Eleanor Barnes Ray on July 2, 1937. He was the third son of ten children and was a second father to his younger siblings, Tim, Denny and Darlene Ray. He played football and basketball in high school, in addition to running track, receiving a football scholarship to Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Gloriann White (Glori). While in college, Gee was in the Army Reserves as a tanker, not seeing any active duty, but serving his country for 8 years. Graduating in 1960, he played pro-football for the Edmonton Eskimos in Canada for 2 seasons. Gee and Glori married on January 21, 1961, and celebrated 50 wonderful years before Glori's passing in 2011.

Gee worked as an Adult Probation Officer in McLennan County for 27 years. He made a tremendous impact in the lives of his probationers, sharing his faith and family. Retiring from the county, Gee worked at Cargill Foods for 3 years. Throughout his life, Gee felt very strongly about the importance of helping those in need, donating more than 200 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, in addition to driving blood supplies from Waco, Dallas, Austin, and Houston for the Red Cross for a number of years. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church for 37 years, serving as a deacon and teaching various Sunday School classes and groups. He moved his membership to Meadowbrook Baptist Church in 2013, following the death of his beloved wife.

Gee loved his God, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his church, fishing and hunting, and the Red Cross. Coaching his two sons in pee wee football and teaching them to hunt, he impacted many young lives. He was 'Papa Gee' to almost everyone, giving a ready smile or making funny faces, showing Jesus' love to all.

Gee is preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Eleanor Barnes Ray, and George Ray, Sr., and Fran Ray; his wife, Glori; his brothers, Bill and Ron Ray; his sister-in-law, Kathy Ray; and his grandson, Timothy.
