Lt. Col. Everette Wesley Rayburn, USAF, Retired, 89, passed away on March 23, 2013 in League City, Texas. He was born October 9, 1923 in Venus, Texas to Andrew Jones and Sarah Ellen (Mills) Rayburn, the youngest of 7 children.
Everette grew up in various towns in the area around and south of Dallas, Texas. He entered the United States Army Air Corps after graduating from high school and served as an Air-Sea Rescue Flight Officer on Bermuda during World War II.
Everette attended Southern Methodist University on the G.I. Bill after the war.
He married Julianna Woodward in 1947 in Bosqueville, Texas.
Re-enlisting in the United States Air Force, he became an officer and a pilot serving internationally in Greenland, Uruguay, Taiwan and Viet Nam during his long career. At retirement, he was Deputy Commandant of Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas.
In retirement, Everette was able to devote himself to serving as he so loved to do with such organizations as the Glorietta Baptist Assembly in New Mexico; the Mexican Baptist Children’s Home, an orphanage in San Antonio, Texas; and Chalk Bluff Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. Over some 25 years in Waco, he incrementally built the home so beloved in memory to his children and grandchildren. Characteristically, while designing and building the home, he sought the counsel and aid of many in the community and all who helped also became friends.
Everette was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Julianna and his parents and brothers and sister.
Everette is survived by his son Terry (Melodie) Rayburn of Kansas City, Missouri, his son Keith Rayburn of Cleburne, Texas, his daughter Paula (David) Kirby of Seabrook, Texas; his grandchildren Jonathan Rayburn, Jordan Rayburn, Josiah Rayburn, Anna Rayburn, Beth (Lee) Wilson, great grandchildren Abbey Wilson and Liam Wilson; his nephews and nieces and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at Chalk Bluff Baptist Church, 5993 Gholson Road, Waco, Texas at 10 am on April 1, 2013. Internment will follow at Bosqueville Cemetery.
A visitation will be held at Pecan Grove Funeral Home of Waco, Texas (address) Sunday evening March 31 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to be made to Happy Hill Farms.
