Gene, born October 10, 1938, to Stepan (Steve) Martin and Milady F. (Pomykal) Kamas, stepped into eternity to meet his savior Jesus Christ on Friday, May 5, 2023. He was born on the family farm in Wesley, Texas a community outside of Brenham. He attended Wesley country school and graduated from Brenham High School. He met his bride to be, Mary Lou Koehn, at Brenham high. After 4 years of courtship and a signature from Gene’s dad giving permission for the marriage, for he was not yet 21, the knot was tied at St. Paul’s Lutheran church on September 14, 1958. Gene attended Blinn Junior College in Brenham and finished his degree at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville in 1961. During his life he worked as a carpenter in Houston, Texas with his father Steve and cousin, Arnold Jecmenek. He sold insurance for American National and then worked as a remote salesman for the Brazos Poultry Company in Bryan, Texas. In 1973 he went to work for Germania Insurance Company as a claims adjuster. Gene and Mary Lou owned and operated the KN Root Beer Drive-In in Brenham. They were active in the Brenham Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, the Sons of Hermann and the Elks Lodge. The couple were long-time residents of Brenham until 1974 when their family moved to Robinson, Texas; Robinson was a central location for Gene’s territory as claims adjuster for Germania. In Robinson, they found a community where their children finished school and a church home at St. John’s United Church of Christ. He retired from Germania in 1999. Gene enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, bar-b-quing, drinking a cold beer or warm beer, he wasn’t picky. At a family gathering he once told those present that he loved his wife and was proud of his children and grandchildren but the one thing he was most grateful for was Jesus Christ dying for his sins. He had accepted Jesus into his heart and knew his soul was secured in heaven. He was always willing to help others anyway he could and felt part of his calling was to make people laugh and smile. Thus, in his later years, Gene ended his conversations with “Happy Days”.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Stepan “Steve” Martin Kamas and Milady Pomykal Kamas, siblings Ladislav “Lad” Kamas and his wife Evelyn, Leroy Kamas, and Vlasta Kamas Baldwin and her husband Roland and their son Gene.
