Emmett Dempster

November 1, 1947 — November 6, 2015

Emmett Wesley “Wes” Dempster, 68, passed away peacefully in the still after the storm on Friday, November 6, 2015. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Wes was born in Baton Rouge, LA. On November 1, 1947. He was the son of Jack and Lois Dempster formerly of Waco. Wes graduated from Camelback High School in Phoenix, Arizona and attended Phoenix College before enlisting in the military.

Wes honorably served in the United States Air Force as a combat motion picture cameraman. He spent time with the 600th Photo Squadron in Vietnam where he was an aerial photographer on flying status in Southeast Asia. He was awarded the highly coveted Department of Defense Combat Newsfilm Photographer of the Year in 1972. Wes later enjoyed a freelancing career in feature films and television and also sports, music & entertainment venues. His career ended abruptly when he was diagnosed with a degenerative brain condition. He spent his remaining years in long-term care facilities overseen by his loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Dempster; and his brother-in-law, William Sowers.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Jack and Cille Dempster of South Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Coy Jones; nephew Adam Brewer; sister, Jerrelon Sowers; and dear friends, Bill and Toni Mayer of Plano, TX.
The family wishes to thank the loving and compassionate care provided by Gentiva Hospice and the many caregivers over the years at Royal Manor Health Center.
His sweet hospice nurse, Terry, stated it so well, “He was a picture to us of child-like faith that just receives each day and it’s suffering and joy as a gift with gratitude from the Lord.”

Wes touched many lives and taught us all how to live with a grateful heart. We rejoice that he is now healed and is enjoying that beloved cup of coffee with his family and friends in Heaven!

Donations or memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 510 N. Valley Mills Dr, Waco, or your favorite veterans organization.
