Elizabeth Turner Gunn, beloved “Mother,” “Granny,” or “Bubba,” as her two brothers Jack and Gary called her, passed away on October 6, 2024, at the age of 94 in Waco, TX.
Elizabeth is survived by her brother Jack Turner of Abilene, TX, two daughters Lori (Walter) Quinn of Nashville, TN and Merri Ann (Martin) Bailey of Hewitt, TX. Elizabeth has four grandchildren, Caitlin (Charles) Martin of Austin, TX, Connor (Carolyn) Quinn of Nashville, TN, Chase Bailey of Austin, TX, and Elizabeth Ann (Max) Berjes of Austin, TX; two great-grandsons Brooks Quinn and Callum Quinn of Nashville, TN; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She always made sure the grandkids left with “coke money” in their pockets, a tradition started by her mother.
Elizabeth was born on March 14, 1930, to Grady Penn Turner and Syble Lorene Guthrie Turner in Voss, TX. She was an avid college football and basketball fan, remaining loyal to the Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears. Growing up in Mertzon, TX, she loved playing sports, including basketball, softball, and running track. She graduated from high school in Irion County.
In 1949 in San Angelo, TX, she met Stanley Gunn whom she married on January 28, 1950. There, she worked as a telephone operator, where she was photographed for a newspaper feature on her work in the San Angelo Standard-Times. She gave birth to two daughters, and in 1963, the family moved to Brady, TX where Elizabeth and Stanley worked together to build a successful business with Morton Foods.
Moving to Waco in the summer of 1973, they purchased a home in Robinson where both daughters attended school. Elizabeth and Stanley were hard-working, but spent their downtime playing rounds of dominoes with friends and helping serve in their church. They were members of Lake Shore Church of Christ and later New Road Church of Christ. Stanley passed away at the age of 92 on March 22, 2018. They were married for 68 years.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Robinson Cemetery in Robinson, TX on October 12, 2024, after a graveside service. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all the members of Elizabeth’s care team, and especially those at Brookdale, The Grandson Home Care, and Bluebonnet Hospice.
