Ed Vernon Smith 103, of Waco passed away at a local nursing home Sunday, June 9, 2013. Services will be 10 am Wednesday, June 12, at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive visitors Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
Ed was born September 16, 1909 in Waco, Texas, to William J. and Ida Mae Jackson Smith. He married the love of his life, Inez Prestige on November 12, 1932, they were married 62 wonderful years. He served in the Air Force during WW II from 1945 to 1948, earning the rank of Sergeant. He owned and operated Smith’s Texaco Service Station with his brother at 18th and Colcord for many years, until their retirement. He also was a gate attendant for many years at the Baylor Football Stadium.
Ed enjoyed bowling and bowled in a senior league for many years until his health prohibited him from continuing. He also loved fishing, traveling and playing dominos. He was a long time member of Park Lake Drive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez Smith; brothers, J.C., Hubert, Jack, Roy and Curtis Smith; sister, May Pearl Smith Meier.
He is survived by his sister, Syble Smith O’Bryant and husband, John; sister-in-laws, Mildred Smith, Olga Ruth Smith and Alleen Smith; numerous, nieces and nephews.
