Doris Laverne Alexander Petty, after a long struggle with illness went to be with the Lord Saturday, December 12, 2015. Funeral services will be held 1p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco. Interment will follow at Robinson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 6-8p.m.
Doris was born August 18, 1932 in Irene, TX. She grew up on a blackland farm in Honeyflatt, near Bynum, TX. She graduated from Bynum High School in 1949 and then attended College in Corsicana, TX. She fell in love with and married James M. Petty in Hillsboro, TX in 1952. She lived in several places in Texas over the years including Irving, China Spring and Robinson, TX. After a few early years working for Lone Star Gas in Taylor, TX she spent most of her career in banking in the central Texas area. A devout Christian and Southern Baptist since the day she was baptized at Snake Creek with her lifelong friends, she has been a faithful and very active member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church for over 26 years in Robinson, TX. There, she and her husband James made many great friends. She loved to plan trips for the seniors, arrange holiday parties and to play 42 with friends. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, worked with the church home bound ministry, loved to participate in filling shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, was a breast cancer survivor, worked with many other local charities, and was always ready to help in any way she could. Her favorite hobby was to work outside and keep a beautifully landscaped yard. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit 45 of the 50 States.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents Stephen H. and Leola Bowman Alexander, and her adoring husband James M. Petty.
Doris is survived by her son, James Kirk Petty; step-children, George Mark and wife Paula Jean Petty, Leta Jane and husband Ezra Chaudoin; step-grandchildren, Edward Petty, Denise McKoy, Theresa Fernandez, John Miller, and Rebecca Bilbrey, and their children. Also surviving Doris is her devoted and loving brother Stephen H. Alexander and his children Denise Stanfill, Wayne and wife MaryBeth Alexander, and Vickie Gabbert and their children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Meadowbrook Baptist Church building fund or The American Cancer Society.
