Catherine Sammons

Catherine Rose Sammons, 85, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021 in Hewitt. Funeral services will be 10a.m. Thursday, November 18 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson, Texas with Dr. Cary Killough officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Waco Memorial Park in Waco. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 17 at Pecan Grove Funeral Home.

Anne Catherine Sloan Rose Willis Sammons was born in Palestine, Texas on August 26, 1936. She was the youngest of 5 children born to James M. Sloan and Mary Eastland Sloan. Cathy attended Tyler Jr. College in Tyler, TX and received an Associate Degree in 1956. During her time at TJC, she was a member of the Apache Belles, a girls drill team. Cathy moved to Houston, Texas in 1956 and went to work for State Farm Insurance Co. in the claims office. She continued working for State Farm serving in the Houston, Beaumont, Waco, and Corpus Christi offices. She retired in 1991 as a Claims Specialist. Cathy married Elmo Rose, Jr. in December of 1956. Elmo passed away in 2002 after 32 years serving with the Department of Public Safety. He retired in 1994 as a captain. After retirement, Elmo and Cathy traveled extensively throughout the U.S. in their motor home. They were members of the Bosque River Sams RV group and both served as president at separate times.

At her 50th class reunion Cathy became reacquainted with a classmate Walter Willis, Jr. They married in 2005 and Walter was taken away in 2007 by cancer. In 2009, Cathy married James (J.C.) Sammons. J.C. and Cathy had been in the same church and Sunday school for over 15 years. Cathy was a member of the “Son” Shine class at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, in Robinson, Texas for many years. During this time, she and J.C. started a ministry of sending coupons to Fort Hood, Texas. This ministry sent hundreds of thousands of coupons to the commissary for the use by military wives. She was a member and Past Matron of McLennan Chapter No. 639, Order of the Easter Star, a past Deputy of Texas Grand Chapter and a past District 3 Humanitarian Chairman. She was also a member of the Past Matrons-Past Patrons Association of McLennan County. She was a member of Elizabeth Gordon Bradley Chapter, DAR. Cathy was a volunteer for Friends for Life for over 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Rose; husband, Walter Willis; son, David Glen Rose; brothers, James C. Sloan and William (Bill) Sloan.

Mrs. Sammons is survived by her husband of 12 years, J.C. Sammons; her daughter, Rebecca Bradford of Allen; grandchildren, Michelle Bradford Cooper and husband Andy, Laura Bradford of Dallas, Cara Bradford Pendleton of Plano, and Christopher Shugard of Odem; along with 5 great-grandchildren, Ryan Cooper, Kailey Cooper, Hannah Duling of McKinney, Paxton and Cameron Shugard of Odem; sister, Mary Griffen of Modesto, California; brother, Matt Sloan of El Paso; sister-in-law, Verna Pettite Sloan of Holly Ranch Lake; and many cousins and friends.
