The pain of my father’s death is heartbreaking and painful, which is why stories like Billy’s should not be ignored. The only way we will conquer the drug epidemic is to share our stories and raise awareness. I’m not going to let his death be in vain. My father was a great man, but he couldn’t shake his drug habit. I only had “Dad” when he was sober. When he was on drugs, I didn’t know that man. He missed so much of my life and so much of his grandchildren’s lives because he was cooped up in his uninhabitable home succumbing to his addictions. The addictions caused him financial hardship, damage to his home, loss of many relationships, loss of marriages, loss of jobs, loss of health, and finally the loss of his life at 66 years old. His addiction hurt a lot of people, not just him. He refused help and always thought he was strong enough to battle it on his own. No one is strong enough. He also lost three other cousins at a young age to drug addiction. If you are struggling with addiction, I pray that you realize how much it hurts you and others around you and seek help. I pray that this country wakes up and realizes that many Americans are dying every day from mental health issues and drug addiction. I pray that there is more funding to help these people in America. I pray that his death is not in vain.
