Lily Alzona H. Tacker, 94, of Robinson died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at First Evangelical Church, 6347 South I-35 in Waco, with the Rev. Richard Rust officiating. Burial will follow at the Tacker plot in Robinson Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at 12:30 p.m. at the church for lunch and visitation.
Mrs. Tacker was born Aug. 24, 1923, the eldest of four children to musicians and teachers Meta S. and Clarence Hartwick. She married Odis L. (Pat) Tacker on March 27, 1948, in Robinson, and they were married for 54 years until his death in 2002.
Faith, family, and fun were important to her. She grew up as a member of St. John’s in Robinson, where her mother was the church organist, and later joined Zion United Church of Christ with her husband and children. Alzona recalled traveling into Waco to attend high school and many summer evenings when her parents and sisters entertained neighbors with “mini concerts” from their front porch.
She helped Pat with his home building business while raising their sons, Tom and Terry. Their last project together was working on the construction of Zion UCC Church (now First Evangelical). The couple also built the lodge, caretaker’s home and gazebo at the Master’s Workshop Church Camp in Waco.
Along the way, Alzona participated in many bus trips through the church, worked numerous summer camps at the Master’s Workshop, taught vacation Bible school and enjoyed learning with the ladies church groups and classes. The family took many camping, fishing and sightseeing trips, with one of her favorites being a trip to Yellowstone National Park. There were many exuberant domino games and shopping trips to Canton with family and friends, including the late Lacy Garmon and Blanche Street. Alzona also enjoyed going to athletic events, receiving a lifetime pass to Robinson High School for her volunteer work there when her sons were students. She delighted in watching her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their children participate in athletics and concerts, including listening to her niece Lorna Willhelm perform in local concerts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and several brother- and sister-in-laws.
Survivors include her two sons; Tom Tacker and wife Debbie and Terry Tacker and wife Brenda; grandson Daniel Tacker and fiancée Jordan Adams, granddaughters Carrie Tindall and Misty Tindall and children; three sisters, Marian Garmon, Norvell and husband Roy Lasseter, and Martha and husband Charles Gentle; special niece and caretaker Mary Frances Howard, numerous nieces, nephews and their families, and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Chris Howard, Clay Lasseter, Mike Reaves, and Matt Reeves.
Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Church, 6347 South I-35, Waco TX 76706.
