Obituary for John Thomas "J.T." Bryant

John Thomas (J.T.) Bryant, 92, of Gatesville, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018. A Celebration of Life service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 3rd at Gatesville Church of Christ, 2417 E. Main St., Gatesville, with Edward Schaub officiating. There will be a visitation 1 hour prior to service, starting at 10:00 AM at the church. The family had a private burial for J.T. at Restland Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Pecan Grove Funeral Home.

J.T. was born July 28, 1926 to Will Douthitt and Ethel Cornelia (Frazier) Bryant on a farm near Rogers. He had the great adventure of growing up in 29 places in the Hill Country and West & Central Texas, his favorites being Rogers, a 30,000 acre ranch outside of Van Horn, Temple, and Gatesville. J.T. served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was stationed in Philippines, Guam, Saipan, and Iwo Jima during his time in the service. J.T. married Betty Melton on May 2, 1948 in Temple, Texas. He was in management at Lone Star Gas for 15 years and spent 12 years as the Superintendent at Christ’s Haven for Children in Keller. After retiring twice before, he worked for Scott’s Funeral Home for just over 17 years before retiring a third time. He and Betty enjoyed traveling and camping. J.T. also enjoyed cars, music, and playing “42” with family. J.T. was a longtime resident of Gatesville, serving on the Gatesville City Council, and a faithful member of Gatesville Church of Christ, serving as an elder for several years. He was a kind, Christian gentleman with a deep interest in people, was a faithful friend and mentor, a wonderful husband, and a great Daddy and Papaw.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and wife of 70 years, Betty.

J.T. is survived by his children, Donna Cranfill and husband Bill, John Bryant and wife Meagan; grandchildren, Kristi Braly and husband Wade, Karen Robbins and husband Mark, Amy Stewart and husband Chris, Karla Swanson and husband Jeff, Amber Innerarity and husband Matt; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Paxton, Pat Tallman; sister-in-law, Rachel Bundrant; brother-in-law, Bill Melton and wife Patsy; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

J.T.’s family would like to thank Hillside Nursing and Kindred Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to Foster’s Home for Children, PO Box 978, Stephenville, Texas 76401.
